We envisioned a school that would serve as a central hub for the entire village, attentive to the needs of the community and operating around the clock. The project is planned for the Casamance region, which is a remote one also in the Senegal's scale, divided from the country by the Republic of Gambia, creating a unique enclaved area. The subtropical land embraces the Casamance river, functioning as the region’s beating heart. All of the above inspired our work and led us towards a simple yet vibrant design.
Our design is based on two connected wings: One wing houses the classrooms, while the other serves as the administrative area. Through this complex flows a wave, resembling the Casamance river, on which we based the landscape design of two courtyards – one for kids to play and one for adults to gather. The linking joint between the two wings is an adaptable space, dividable into two separate areas or combined to form a spacious, colorful indoor environment, offering versatility and accommodating various educational and communal needs.
Bamboo serves as the primary structural material for the wall frames and the double roof system, providing both strength and sustainable benefits.
Leveraging its flexibility, we designed the interior space with a continuous bamboo screen, serving as a wall and inner roof, creating a womb-like atmosphere for the users. The changing intervals between the bamboo allow natural light and airflow to enter.
